There are approximately 20 pure alphabets in common use and Armenian alphabet is one of them. It was created around 405 AD by Mesrop Mashtots. The alphabet originally consisted of 36 letters and now it has 39. Over 1600-year existence is the proof of its high quality and profound ability to transfer Armenian language into writing.
While the alphabet has not been modified, the letterforms themselves have carried visual/stylistic alterations throughout centuries. These changes were influenced by multiple factors among which was countries political situation.
This online gallery aims to collect and document examples of old and new Armenian typography seen in books, print materials, and our environment. It was initiated by Mariam Melkumyan in hopes of engaging other designers, photographers, and typography enthusiasts to document, save, and share these symbols of culture.
